UPDATE: ZAMPHIA 2020’s field implementation activities were paused on March 30th, 2020 due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Please stay safe and we look forward to resuming operations soon.

Peer educators are facilitating the ZAMPHIA 2020 knowledge, attitudes, and practices assessments among community members.

Ciheb has begun preparing for the Zambia Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (ZAMPHIA 2020). This nationwide survey will assess the prevalence and incidence of HIV, focusing on the coverage and impact of HIV services, and characterizing HIV-related risk behaviors using a nationally representative sample of adults aged 15 years and older. The project has been holding technical planning meetings among key stakeholders and begun implementing knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) assessments to gauge how HIV is currently understood by community members.

The survey will be rolled out in February 2020 and will draw on lessons learned from Ciheb’s successful Nigeria population-based HIV impact assessment. It will combine a novel implementation, data management and linkage-to-care approach to ensure that HIV-positive individuals identified through the survey are efficiently linked to care and treatment and assess progress towards achievement of the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets on national and subnational levels. The data will be used to focus HIV services and resources to the areas of greatest need and help move Zambia closer to HIV epidemic control.

A technical working group meeting held in September was attended by over 65 members and key stakeholders, including Dr. Lunda Shibemba, the National Coordinator for Pathology and Laboratory Services at the Zambia Ministry of Health. As he opened the meeting, Dr. Shibemba stated that the Ministry had assembled a highly skilled team for the technical planning process. “I am confident that we have the right people in this room needed to complete the tasks set out in the objectives of this meeting,” stated Dr. Shibemba.
