What We Do

Ciheb is focused on advancing understanding and improving the treatment of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, hepatitis, and malaria, as well as supporting surveillance systems critical for responding to emerging biosecurity threats. We also are addressing new challenges presented by the onset of noncommunicable diseases among aging HIV populations.

Ciheb’s comprehensive approach to facilitating change in resource-limited countries involves building capacity from the ground up, and engaging communities and regional and national governments to effectively respond to exigent health challenges. Our approach in achieving sustainable impact includes developing robust information management systems, employing data for action, enhancing professional education, introducing continuous quality improvement processes, conducting rigorous disease surveillance, and deploying essential infrastructure.

Ciheb is a leader in facilitating country ownership of health system initiatives. Nongovernmental and community-based organizations, universities, and science-based health service providers in multiple African nations today are continuing to carry out programs that originated as Ciheb initiatives. We have also facilitated the transfer of laboratory management and service delivery, clinical service delivery, and in-service health worker training to government ministries, educational institutions, and regional and district health management teams.

Currently, Ciheb implements an array of CDC- and NIH-funded projects from its Baltimore campus headquarters and through its eight country offices in Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia. Our projects cover eight key areas:
